Our Fall concert, features Franz Joseph Haydn’s masterful “London” Symphony, No. 104.
Written in London as the capstone of his 2nd trip there, it is also a musical valedictory, his final symphony – although he composed many other pieces after that! Also on the program will be Mozart’s ebullient Symphony No. 29, written when he was 17, Rossini’s energetic Overture to “The Italian Girl in Algiers,” and Mikhail Glinka’s “Karmarinskaja Fantasie,” based on a traditional East Slavic dance tune.
This concert will lift your spirits, and it will also help our larger community, as donations received will go to aid the victims and refugees of the continuing war in Ukraine.
Now in its 34th season, the 40-member New City Sinfonia presents three free orchestra concerts to the San Diego Community each year, plus additional outreach programs. Sponsored as a class in the San Diego Continuing Education program, the Sinfonia rehearses at San Diego Mesa College, and draws its members from all over San Diego County.
Performances take place in a number of local venues, and often include soloists, from students to nationally-known professionals; the late-Spring concert regularly features Concerto Competition winners of the Music Teachers Association. Director Daniel Ratelle is the founding conductor of the Sinfonia. A native San Diegan, he has degrees from Santa Clara University and San Diego State University, and has been the Choir Director of the 1st Unitarian Universalist Church, the Associate Conductor of the San Diego Master Chorale, and the Music Director of Pacific Camerata. In addition to leading the Sinfonia, he also teaches Music at Mesa College.
